Residents came to American Legion Post 202 behind City Hall to honor the men and women who served in the U.S. military.
“We are so blessed and honored to be here to honor our veterans,” said Vice Mayor Christine Thompson.
American Legion welcomed the audience before starting with an opening prayer. In addition, the Keystone Heights JROTC presented the Colors, and the American Heritage Girls Troop 7448 led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Thompson spoke about Veterans Day and its meaning. Guests heard from local veterans like Richard Hall, Robert Protomastro, Jean Alexander and Fred Dressel, who talked about their experiences in the military and what it means to be a veteran. Guests were reminded of Wreaths Across America.
The event closed with prayer and had a complimentary lunch provided by the American Legion and Amvets Post 86.
“It had a great turnout for Keystone Heights,” said George Owen, 2nd Vice at The American Legion Post 202. “We support the veterans, we support the families of veterans, and we support the community in which that American Legion Post is located.”
The organization helps veterans with various needs such as health care, finances, and assistance with their VA Disability Claim. They also provide a social hub in which veterans can congregate and enjoy each other’s company. However, the organization not only helps veterans but is also open to the public and provides various programs to the community.
