KEYSTONE HEIGHTS - With defensive tackle Trey Jeffries romping 36 yards with a handoff to paydirt in the final score of the night, the Keystone Heights football team won a 49-8 victory over Joshua Christian Academy out of Jacksonville to solidify a playoff spot in Region 2-2S under first-year head coach Steven Reynolds.
"We'll get either Baker County or Yulee in the first playoff game, I think, with us sitting at number seven in the region," said Keystone Heights coach Steven Reynolds. "We could move to number six with a win this week."
Reynolds, who took over for long-time coach Chuck Dickinson this season after a handful of seasons as defensive coordinator, has opened up the Indians' offense with a mix of passing and running that has created three games with 40-plus points scored in the Indian's 5-4 season record. Keystone Heights travels to P.K. Yonge on Thurs., Nov. 2 for their final regular season game.
Against Joshua Christian, a well-rested and game-hungry Indians squad that had an extra week of preparation due to a forfeit win over Taylor, came out firing on all cylinders with running back Cartez Daniels zig-zagging a 54-yard scoring run, Darrion Grady blasting off the left corner for a 42-yard score, and quarterback Baylor Ford tossing for three touchdowns; two to Garrison Teague, one to Andru Siemer. Daniels finished with 86 yards for the night on just five carries.
"Garrison finished with a great night with two touchdown catches, three tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss," said Reynolds.
In the final stanza of the night, up 42-8, Jeffries got the call for a blast up the middle and the burly state champion weightlifter simply followed a wall of his offensive linemen to the goal line from 36 yards out.
In the air, Wyatt Van Zant snagged three of Ford's passes for 46 yards. Van Zant scored off an interception as one of the Indians' seven touchdowns. Kicker Tyler Sapp hit seven perfect PAT kicks. Tallon Campbell also had an interception.
