EAGLE HARBOR - With a tie for the individual title, at first count, Clay High golf teammates Robert Young and Will Guy dominated the field at the district 2-2A golf championships to earn top honors to also drive the Blue Devils to the team title. Guy scored the win with a 76 after a final count with Young at 77. Golfers played at the par-72 Eagle Harbor Golf Course in Fleming Island on Monday. Middleburg High’s Lucas Wahlstrom had an outstanding round of 78 to take third place in a tie with Lincoln’s Eric Romedy, an early tournament leader.
Clay scored 333 to beat Lincoln’s 344 as runnerup and Middleburg’s 361 for third as those top three teams advance to the region championships next week, November 1 at the Golden Ocala Golf Club in Citra at noon.
In other districts, Keystone Heights’ boys team won at district 3-1A title over Madison County and Lafayette, 349-352-358. Keystone Heights top finisher was Alexander Addington with a third place 81 with Madison County’s Jarrod Sullivan winning at 77 and St. Joseph Academy’s Matthew Webb second at 78.
“These greens were superfast and I think I played ok today,” said Young. “The state tournament is at a very hilly course and we get some hills whenever we play a Palatka’s course.”
In the final hole, both Guy and Young were forced to improvise to save their scores with Guy shooting off the wooded section of the fairway to hit the green while Young had to chip sideways in the sand bunker to create some space to hit up to the green.
“Nothing much I could do at that hole,” said Young. “My first hole was a disaster and I had to mentally recover. I hit an 80 chip way over the top and into the woods. As a golfer, you just have to forget about it and go to the next shot.”
Guy, who missed regions last year with a presumably disaster 88 score, stayed consistent with back-to-back 38s on the first and final nine holes littered with a better first nine that saw two birdies and three pars.
“Practice, practice practice over the summer and I’m at a 76,” said Guy. “The more you the better you get I guess.”
On the back nine, Guy stayed consistent with seven pars and two double bogies to finish at 76.
Young bogied his first hole then birdied twice to set up a strong start but three bogies kept him at 38.
In the final nine, two birdies got discounted by two bogies and a double.
Wahlstrom, with just one birdie for the day, overtook teammate Chase Carroll, the lone Class 2A state meet golfer from Clay County last year, with a string of pars in the second nine holes while Carroll opened with a 40 then hit 42 to finish to finish seventh.
For the individual advancements, Orange Park’s Brock Buhnerkemper advances with a fifth place 79 with Ridgeview’s Javier Cruz at eighth at 84.
