FLEMING ISLAND – The Purple Star School of Distinction Designation established by the Florida Legislature and signed into law in June 2021, recognizes schools that support the unique needs of military families. Clay County District Schools is committed to being a military-friendly school system and providing military students and families support. This school year, Fleming Island Elementary was designated by the Florida Department of Education as a Purple Star School of Distinction.

To celebrate this honorable distinction, Fleming Island will host a flag-raising ceremony on Friday, Jan. 13, from 8:45 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. In partnership with Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Command Master Chief Shane R. Edwards will be in attendance to share a few words of appreciation about the military-connected programs for families and students.

Superintendent David Broskie and County Manager Howard Wanamaker will also join the ceremony. Members from Fleming Island High’s NJRTOC will lead the presentation of colors with students from the elementary school’s chorus will sing the National Anthem.
