FIHS Nix earns scholar honor

MANHEIM, PA – Fleming Island High state champion wrestler Chad Nix, Class of 2020, has been named as a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American with a group of seven student athletes from George Mason University.

Nix, a graduate student wrestler at GMU after transferring from Campbell University, was honored with his George Mason wrestling team by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) recognizing exceptional student-athletes who demonstrate excellence in academics and athletics. A program-best seven Patriots were named NWCA Scholar All-Americans, a program best.

Nix, wrestling heavyweight for GMU, but injured this season, graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2023 from Campbell with an MBA degree with a projected masters’ degree in Real Estate Development from GMU in 2025.

George Mason led the Mid-American Conference in most honorees, followed by Northern Illinois with six.

All seven are first-time honorees of the NWCA Scholar All-America honor. Three grad students made the list led by fifth-year student Paul Pierce and grad transfers Brandon Wittenbert and Chad Nix. NCAA Qualifiers Evan Maag and Malachi DuVall earned the distinction, as well as junior Tyler Kocak and redshirt sophomore Kaden Cassidy.

To earn honor, wrestlers need to meet at least one of the following parameters:

Have a 3.0 GPA at the certifying institution and place that Nationals in 2024. OR

Have a 3.2 GPA at the certifying institution and be a National Qualifier in 2024. or have a 3.5 GPA at the certifying institution and either have represented the team at the Conference Tournament OR have a 60% or better record in a minimum of 15 matches AS recorded in Track Wrestling.

This year, 338 wrestlers from 78 institutions were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements and commitment to the sport of wrestling.
