Faith walk: Serenity Prayer

Proverbs 23:26 says, “O my son, give me your heart. May your eyes take delight in following my ways.”
Many know the Serenity prayer: or think they do! The prayer is attributed to American Theologian Reinhold Niebuhr. Most know this part: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.” Pretty cool stuff!
But did you know there’s more? It continues to say, “Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen.” WOW!
Here’s the challenge. Recite each day this prayer and focus on the SECOND part. If you want peace, calm, comfort, and an escape from the chaos, here’s the prescription. Surrender. Luke 9:23 says, Luke 9:23 says, “Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.”
Being a believer and experiencing true, lasting peace means living by Jesus’ way and not our own. That means we will have to practice sacrifice and surrender. While it may seem like we are simply giving things up, I assure you that what we receive on the other side is so much better. The things of this world are fleeting, but the peace, love, and joy you’ll experience in the Lord are eternal!
Let the truth found in this beautiful and famous prayer come to shape your heart toward God and give you the inspiration to surrender to the Lord. As you recite it each day, the Lord will renew you from the inside out and grant you a new and more powerful identity in Him!
