A.W. Tozer, the highly respected pastor, author, and theologian once said, “I can safely say, on the authority of all that is revealed in the Word of God, that any man or woman on this earth who is bored and turned off by worship is not ready for heaven.”

How do you define worship? Oftentimes, we use it to describe a very specific part of our experience in church on Sunday. But that’s not all it is! Worship is more than singing a few songs on Sunday. In John 4:24, Jesus says, “For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

To worship in the Spirit means that we offer our praise to God as guided by the Holy Spirit. Our worship should not be artificial, but rather be a genuine expression of God’s Spirit within us. It’s the understanding of our worship as more than a physical act: it is an act of the heart and soul. How do we worship in the Spirit? We cultivate a relationship with God and letting our praise flow naturally out of an earnest desire to express our thankfulness and adoration to Him. This instruction was given to encourage to not simply go through the motions. God desires that we worship Him because we want to show our love for Him. To worship God in truth simply means that our worship is to be based on the truth of the scriptures. We should be able to articulate who we are giving our worship to and why we are doing it. It’s all about avoiding the mindset of pleasing God through worship in order to obtain some kind of reward.

To worship in truth is to base our worship of God solely on His character and presence in our lives. How does one worship in truth? By spending time reading God’s Word each day and forming a deep understanding of who He is and how He works in your life. God wants our worship to come not out of obligation but from our hearts and soul. He wants us to love Him and come to Him by our own choice. This is what true worship is all about. Be intentional about worshipping God each and every day.
