GREEN COVE SPRINGS - Fleming Island High's volleyball team kept its win streak going with wins over Oakleaf and Fletcher, last week but let a few too many errors get in the way in a 3-1 loss to Santa Fe on Tuesday, September 8 in the Fleming Island High gym. The Golden Eagles, who fell to 6-1 and were ranked third in Class 4A, were in a three-day gauntlet from Sept. 8-10 with Santa Fe and 7A-Spruce Creek at home, then a road trip to Ponte Vedra.
"Teams like this you can't make the small mistakes we made tonight and win the game," said Fleming Island coach Amy Yoder, who traded wins against Santa Fe last year and will travel September 29 to Santa Fe High for round two. "We will take what we learned about ourselves tonight and get better from this loss. Now we know what it takes to be a champion team."
Santa Fe (8-1), is ranked third in 3A following a season-opening loss to unbeaten Calvary Christian (8-0 ranked first in 3A), and has ripped off wins over Middleburg, Chiles (5A champions), Gainesville, Buchholz and Ocala Vanguard.
Fleming Island won game one 25-20 with a thunderous array of strikes from Lilly Eason and Lauren Brosky up front, but Santa Fe adjusted to counter the assault to win the final three games; 20-25, 21-25 and 19-25

(8-0 ranked first in 3A)

Middleburg has dropped two in a row - to Trinity Christian Academy and to unbeaten 8-0 Beachside - after a thrilling 3-2 win over Ponte Vedra.

Middleburg headed to Clay this week and had a Sept. 10 date with Tallahassee Chiles.

The much-anticipated Middleburg-Fleming Island clash will be on Sept. 22 at Fleming Island.

St. Johns Country Day School remained unbeaten at 5-0 with recent wins over University Christian and Bishop Snyder. Christ's Church Academy, 5-2, was up next for a road game. Kendall Proffitt leads with 29 kills, with Kate Pappas adding 26.  The Spartans lost a 3-0 match to Christ's Church Academy on September 8 to fall to 5-1.

Clay High got a spirited 3-2 win over Ridgeview in a loud, packed Clay gym to get to 2-2 with senior McKenzie Harris and freshman Lily Massey combining for 23 kills. Ridgeview got 10 kills from junior Colette Jones, while Emilia Michel added four service aces.

The Panthers rebounded with a 3-1 win over Keystone Heights, with Jones netting 17 kills.

Keystone Heights, 6-4, had four wins in a row before the Ridgeview game. The Indians had road games at Bradford and Union County last week.

Orange Park got its first win over Riverside on Aug. 25, followed by three losses. The Raiders had a road trip to Baker County on Sept. 8, before they returned home to play Ridgeview on Sept. 10.

Oakleaf, 3-3, got a tough 3-2 win over Nease last week. The Knights played Bolles and Episcopal before they traveled to the River City Classic at JJVA.
