FLEMING ISLAND - Fleming Island High first-year football coach Chad Parker offered a few thoughts on his teams' overwhelming 35-6 win in preseason play over Westside on Friday in anticipation of the rivalry matchup with Clay High on Fri., Aug. 25.

"At first, honestly, we didn't know if we would have any running backs that would fit our scheme, but Dehmir Jackson and Tyler Beverly look like two that are as good as I've ever seen," said Parker. "Cibastian (junior quarterback Cibastian Broughton) had good reads for the whole game and kept the game moving. He threw a couple of long balls out there with Daeven Boykin (3 passes, 91 YDs, 2TDs) a top receiver for him."

Fleming Island scored off a Broughton (195 YDS passing, 3TDS) run down the sidelines, Jackson going about 30 yards, Beverly scored one and Boykin snagged two scores in the air.

"We were trying to spread the ball around to get everybody in the end zone and stretch the defense," said Parker. "Dehmir took a swing pass near midfield and turned the jets on. That was a good one."

One aspect of the offense that Parker liked was Broughton's quickness to release the ball on pass plays.

"Westside had a good pass rush and Cibastian was reacting pre-snap to the play and making good decisions," said Parker. "He knew the coverages before the snap and exploit it."

On defense, Parker noted Sebastian Cruz had an interception and a 64-yard punt return.

"We had Joey Couch in on the offensive line for most of the game," said Parker. "We lost a guy and he has stepped up. One play he had two pancake blocks on the same play."

Parker's enthusiasm for the upcoming Clay game is more like a kid in a candy store.

"I've read about the rivalry with the wrestling and football, but I've never been able to see it," said Parker. "I was always coaching somewhere else. I'm more excited just to be a part of the atmosphere."
