ORANGE PARK - A pair of interceptions returned for touchdowns highlighted in an 18-13 district 2-2A round one playoff win for the Fleming Island flag football team over Orange Park, but the reward is a visit to top seed, undefeated and fourth-ranked nationally Ponte Vedra High (15-0) for round two. Ponte Vedra beat First Coast 54-0 in their tournament opener.
In other tournament games, Keystone Heights won 33-6 over Hawthorne to advance to play Bradford County, a 44-0 winner over Eastside. Columbia beat Ridgeview 13-7 in district 4-2A with Middleburg losing 19-13 to Nease also in district 3-3A. Clay had a BYE and will travel to Baker County to play North Marion in district 4-2A. In district 1-4A, Oakleaf defeated Atlantic Coast 25-19 in double overtime to advance to the semifinal with top seed Mandarin (13-1) at Tocoi Creek High.
"We just get on the bus and play our best game of the season," said Fleming Island coach Clint Lyons, who directed a late season flurry of seven wins minus a 24-0 loss to Clay High (11-1) on April 13. "We will be without Poucher (Emily) who got injured and is out for the season."
Lyons' reference to Poucher is pointing out one of his most dynamic players on both sides of the ball, plus the leading punter in the nation through most of the season with a near 40 yards per kick average.
"The rest of the team stepped up tonight (against Orange Park) and we got the job done," Lyons said.
Against Orange Park, with the Lady Raiders striking paydirt first with an interception returned for a 40 yard score by Trinity Dinkins, Fleming Island methodically used runs from a set of quarterbacks—Tara Adams, Mattie Cunningham and Daisy Fletcher—to keep the chains moving with a nifty sideline pass to wide out Amira Martin putting the Eagles in scoring position. Cunningham, at quarterback, hit Fletcher with a scoring pass from 10 yards out to put the score at 7-6.
On the Raiders' ensuing series, it was Fleming Island safety Audrey Ellis stepping in front of a pass from Raider quarterback Ella Crowe to Aiyanna Maclin at the 15-yard line and sprinting to the end zone for a quick 12-7 score.
On the next Raider drive, Crowe was effective in moving the offense with scrambles out of the pocket with running back Erin Strother taking a direct snap for a big gain and Maclin grabbing a pass for 10 yards to midfield, but a fourth down pass was knocked down by Martin on defense.
Ellis and Adams at quarterback used run plays to set up a quick pass to center Summer VanWagenen for a score with just nine seconds to halftime to put Fleming Island up 18-7.
Orange Park opened the third period with Crowe finding Bella Brown with a 40 yard into Fleming Island territory that Crowe finished off with a scoring run to score the game 18-13.
Dinkins almost got a second interception, but with three minutes left in the game, Fleming Island defender Seven Gourdet picked off Crowe. Fleming Island was forced to punt after a sack by rusher Strother, but Crowe missed Dinkins twice with long passes to give Fleming Island final possession.
