GREEN COVE SPRINGS - With fellow Clay High Blue Devil football star Nolan Carroll joining him among a handful of NFL players, former Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl champion Cliff Avril hosted nearly 400 football campers Saturday at Clay High School in his 11th rendition of his free football camp.

“It’s crazy to me that we are in our 11th year of this camp here at Clay High,” said Avril, 37, who played first with the Detroit Lions; a third-round pick in 2008 NFL Draft out of Purdue, then a Seattle Seahawk in 2013 where he was on the 2013 Super Bowl champion team. “I must be getting old.”

Avril currently has two NFL trademarks; first, he scored the fastest Super Bowl points with a 12-second safety of Denver Bronco quarterback Payton Manning on the first snap of the 2013 game, and, second, the first player to win a Super Bowl after playing the previous season on a winless team (Lions).

Clay High head football coach Kyle Kennard,  admitted not being from Avril’s generation of playing, but knew of Avril’s presence on a football field.

“I’m a little bit younger than him,” said Kennard, who had some of his varsity players on the fielding leading drills for Avril’s crew. “We are out here supporting Cliff and Nolan as we get ready to go to our own camp in South Florida for the week to prepare for the upcoming season.”

Avril, a Pro Bowl selection in 2016, suffered a career-ending neck injury in 2017.

Also with Avril was Carroll, a Miami Dolphin, Dallas Cowboy and Philadelphia Eagle defensive back in his NFL days, plus De’Shaan Dixon, a Jacksonville Jaguar linebacker, and Roberto Wallace, a wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins.

Carroll, 36, was drafted out of Maryland by Miami in 2010 in round five as the 145th pick.

One of Carroll’s top plays was a Monday Night Football interception for a touchdown against Eli Manning in an Eagles’ win over rival New York Giants in 2015.
