GREEN COVE SPRINGS - With 105 athletes suited up to play, the Clay High football program took the first steps of seeing what the team might look like in fall 2026 as area teams gear up for spring games and Inter-Squad scrimmages this weekend.

" We want to return the Clay High football program back to the stature it had years ago, " said Clay High second year football coach Jeff Gierke. "I saw a lot of good play tonight."

Clay High opened with an intra-squad scrimmage on Thursday night with an invigorating offense led by senior quarterback Landon Martin, who got passes downfield with ease to wide receivers Daylen Brown and MiKeise Battle. They both scored on long passes.

On Friday, three area football teams will have their spring games: Ridgeview at Crescent City with first year coach Jason Smith, Branford at Keystone Heights with first year coach Cameron Porch and Middleburg at Palatka. Fleming Island will have a Green and Gold scrimmage Friday night as well.

See coverage of these games and more in next week's Clay Today Sports pages.
