Clay girls dominate Floyd E. Lay rankings, Fleming boys second

GAINESVILLE - With team state titles in weightlifting on both sides; boys for Fleming Island and girls for Clay High, Clay High’s girls athletics dominated Class 5A in the FHSAA Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards in a press release of August 4.

Clay, with a repeat of their state weightlifting title and a handful of medalists including record setting Emma Heck, scored a whopping 114 points to outdistance runnerup American Heritage (Plantation) and third placer Matanzas with 75 and 71 points, respectively.

In the girls competition, statewide, Clay finished second to St. Thomas Aquinas’ 151 as top point total for girls with Clay’s 114.0 edging Bolles’ 113.0.

For the boys award, in Class 6A, with the Golden Eagles boys team winning their weightlifting title, second place with behind wrestling powerhouse Lake Gibson was by just a half point, 104.0-103.5 in the final tally. Fleming Island wrestling went right to the edge twice with Lake Gibson in wrestling to push the Golden Eagle point total.

In 2A girls, St. Johns Country Day School, with a state runnerup in soccer and a Final Four girls basketball finish, scored 30 points to finish fifth behind 57 points to cross country and track powerhouse Oak Hall.

In the overall standings, which combine girls scores and and boys scores, Fleming Island finished fourth in Class 6A with St. Thomas Aquinas overwhelming in first at 252.0 with Fleming Island at 147.50 behind Ponte Vedra and New Smyrna Beach.

In Class 5A, Clay was third to Jensen Beach, power volleyball, and American Heritage (Plantation) the the top two just a point apart; 148.0-147.0 and Clay at 122.0.

In Class 2A. St. Johns Country Day School finished sixth again with Oak Hall at the top.

Points are awarded to a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 16 places are scored. In all sports with team scores, points are awarded as follows: 20 for the state champion, 12 for the state runner-up, 9 for the state semifinalists, 6 for 5-8th places, and 3 for 9-16th places. In sports where 16 or less schools qualify for the state tournament bracket, points will only be awarded to the 1st through 8th place finishers using the same scoring system.
