JACKSONVILLE - Two names, Daylen Brown and Antonio Thomas, kept popping up after big plays on the field for Clay High football in a triple-play passing tournament with host ED White and Bolles on Wednesday on a hot, steamy morning.
"Both of them are beasts," said Clay coach Kyle Kennard, as he watched Thomas making catch after catch against an athletic Bolles secondary coached by two former Clay coaches; Bolles head coach Matt Toblin and Class 5A runnerup head coach Joshua Hoekstra, now a defensive coordinator for Bolles. "Daylen is the bigger target in the secondary and Antonio is good at moving downfield quickly."
Against Bolles, both teams showed off efficient quarterback decisions while moving the ball swiftly with Clay going with a two-quarterback system with Landon Martin and Landon Chadwick swapping series for Kennard and offensive coordinator Brian Flaherty.
Thomas got some pass defense on defense with Javion Cobbert playing cover and Martin hovering as a linebacker. Mikeise Battle offered tight coverage as well with Bolles trying numerous times to get an end-zone jump ball for a score.
Against ED White Brown snagged more balls on offense and was able to get additional yardage while Parker Dykas had one interesting tumble between two defenders that resulted in bodies flying and an ED White guy making the final grab.
Clay gears up for a full team pads camp at Webber College in July.
