GREEN COVE SPRINGS - As the only undefeated high school flag football team in Clay County, Clay High has put up big numbers on offense and offered zero points on defense against a schedule that will end against one of the best teams in Florida and the United States.
Clay, 6-0, gets back in the driver's seat on their Class 2A fourth place ranking with perennial champion Tampa Robinson (6-1) on top and the likes of Deltona (7-0) and Bonita Springs (8-0) seated above Clay. Robinson's lone loss was a surprising 25-20 upset by a 3-7 Bloomingdale High team possibly proving Robinson mortal.
Clay, with six shutouts, will target their April 14 season finale against an 8-1 Tallahassee Chiles team: 12th in USA, 12th in Florida, fourth in Class 3A. The last two games for Chiles were wins of 41-0 and 51-0 with Lincoln the toughest win, a 6-0 game.
Chiles lone loss was a 25-6 game to Ponte Vedra, undefeated and ranked number two in Class 3A at 8-0. Seminole Ridge, 7-1, is top ranked with a loss to undefeated Park Vista, ranked third in USA and Florida. Clay's schedule rambles through Santa Fe (4-2), then four teams with sub-.500 records to the Chiles game.
Orange Park, 6-2 with losses to Baldwin in their season opener and to Clay prior to Spring Break, returns with KIPP Bold, Oakleaf, Florida Deaf and Menendez. The Raiders are ranked third in Class 3A with Seminole Ridge, Ponte Vedra and undefeated Bartram Trail in the top 10. Raider quarterback Ella Crowe has 11 scoring passes with basketball teammate Trinity Dinkins snagging six of them.
Middleburg, 5-2 with losses to Orange Park and Tocoi Creek in overtime, has three games that are winnable by record, but include a 2-4 Fleming Island team this week that could be dangerous. After that game, Global Outreach and Gainesville will prelude showdowns with undefeated Bartram Trail and a 4-3 Baldwin squad. Middleburg freshman quarterback Kennedy Jeffress has six rush touchdowns and 15 scoring passes with Payton Morton her top target with 40 catches and nine scores. Zoe Duncan has 26 catches with two scores.
Fleming Island always has the championship pedigree to pull out a strong season finish with the Golden Eagles facing winless Creekside, 3-3 ED White, Middleburg, 5-5 Baker County, 2-2 Oakleaf and a penultimate game with Clay. Riverside, 3-2, ends the season. Fleming Island wide receiver Seven Gourdet leads the scoring with four touchdowns.
Oakleaf, just 2-2, has University Christian 3-2, Orange Park, Hilliard, Fleming Island and Bradford to finish their season. Ridgeview is still winless, 0-5, with a return game against Clay, then Bradford and Matanzas (1-7).
Down south at Keystone Heights, the Lady Indians are at 2-3 with a 4-4 Palatka team, 2-1 Ocala Vanguard, undefeated Buchholz 5-0, Interlachen then a finale with Ocala Forest 5-2.
