ORANGE PARK – The town council reorganized Tuesday night by swearing in Doug Benefield and Susan Winnette Sandlin for the next three years, while councilman Randy Anderson will continue as mayor and Susana Thompson will be the vice mayor.
But the results didn’t come without some drama.
That’s because after Anderson was nominated for mayor by Benefield, Susana Thompson appointed herself for nomination. Anderson won, 3-2, and will start his third year in the ceremonial position.
Councilmembers acted quickly to retain Thompson as vice mayor. She will fill in the vacancy left behind Alan Watt, who recently finished his term at the post.
Benefield was selected to complete the term after councilman and vice mayor Eddie Henley quit a year ago after he was bypassed to be the town’s first Black mayor.
Sandlin and was unopposed for Seat 2 on the council.
The council also passed a proclamation honoring National Police Week, where the town’s officers were called to the podium for recognition.
