ORANGE PARK – Whether you are a Patsy Cline fan or interested in getting to know the singer behind her hits songs “Walking After Midnight,” “Crazy” and “She’s Got You,” Sunday is a day to remember.

“Always… Patsy Cline,” created by Ted Swindley, is sweet, humorous and nostalgic. Equal parts concert and broadway-like production, the hit musical portrays the country music legend, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer like never before. The story follows her friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger. The two met in a Texas honky-tonk in l961.

From that moment on, the two women forged a powerful bond.

“The relationship, which began as fan worship evolved into one of mutual respect. It is the kind of relationship that many fans would like to have with their heroes,” the Thrasher Horne Center wrote on its upcoming event page.

Over a pot of strong coffee, the two women chatted about their common concerns. When Cline finally left for her next job at Dallas, the women exchanged addresses and telephone numbers. Seger never expected to hear from Cline again, but soon after she left, Seger received the first of many letters from Cline and continued a written correspondence for the next two years, inspiring the script for much of the show.

“Always… Patsy Cline” has enjoyed great success all over the United States, including a successful run off-Broadway. It has been one of the most produced musicals in America, according to American Theatre Magazine, and has also been enjoyed internationally by audiences in Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia.

The group will perform at the Thrasher-Horne Center at 6 p.m.. The show will feature director Misty Rowe playing the part of Louise Seger and Cindy Summers as the iconic Patsy Cline.

“My character, Louise Segar, tells the story of the night they met. It comes alive. It’s just poignant and sad and then happy. There’s a lot of emotion in this two-woman play. The journey they take you on, it’s just amazing. And it’s a true story,” Segar told Clay Today.

Rowe started production nearly 20 years ago.

“The first time I did ‘Always… Patsy Cline’ was in Bradson, Missouri at Tony Orlando’s Tie a Yellow Ribbon Theatre. On the opening night, the real Louise Seger came, and she absolutely hated me,” Rowe said. As a former television star, playing in HeeHaw, Fantasy Island, Days of Our Lives and Love Boat, Rowe had never done her own hair and makeup before.

“I knew nothing about wearing a wig. I just put it on- no skull cap or hairpins to secure it. So when I tossed my head after a big musical scene, my wig flew off. Lousie stands up in the middle of the show and shouts, ‘I wouldn’t wear that wig to an outhouse,’ to the top of her voice and storms off. It was the most embarrassing moment of my entire career.”

However, Seger soon returned to the theater. “I was able to get to know her. She started writing me letters and sent me pictures of her when she was young. She was like a spark plug. She had this fiery personality and very bossy. She could be very funny, and that’s what I try to embody in the show,” Rowe said.

The production, complete with humor, genuine emotion and even some audience participation, includes many of Patsy’s unforgettable hits. See for yourself why this remarkable show has received rave reviews nationwide.
