• The City of Green Cove Springs, Clay County, Food Pantry of Green Cove Springs and additional community partners celebrate the newly renamed Augusta Savage Social Services and Cultural Complex at the Arts and Community Center, Museum and Mentoring Building on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

• Sheriff Michelle Cook asks the Board of County Commission for more money because with a starting salary of $38,000, her agency is one of the lowest paid in Northeast Florida.

• An art class at Middleburg High provides colorful ceiling tiles for Orange Park Medical Center’s pediatric ward.

10 years ago, 2016

• St. Vincent’s celebrates its Emergency Room expansion opening with a ribbon-cutting event.

• The Green Cove Springs Police and Clay County Sheriff’s Office provide details of a shooting spree that left four dead, including the shooter, Murray Leon Lancaster, 40, of Green Cove Springs. They said Lancaster killed his estranged girlfriend, Valorie Shea Short, 30, her father, Welland Robert “Buddy” Short, 55, at the entrance sign to Magnolia West, then his ex-wife, Erica Green Lancaster, at the Rosemary Hill Landfill. Law Enforcement eventually found him in a camper on his family’s property with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

• The City of Green Cove Springs breaks ground on a $2.4 million renovation project for the swimming pool at Spring Park.

20 years ago, 2006

• Green Cove Springs police charge Amos Blount Jr. and Dominic Dontay Tinney, both of Green Cove Springs, with the murder and robbery of Tereso Lopez Morente at the St. Johns Landing Apartments,

• City council members elect Debbie Ricks mayor and John Buchanan vice mayor in Green Cove Springs for a one-year term.

• The annual Clay County government barbecue raises $12,000 for the Food Pantry of Green Cove Springs.

30 years ago, 1996

• Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrest Clinton Robert Campbell, 42, of Bostwick, in the 1994 shooting death of Michael Podbevsek, 46, at his home on County Road 209 in Green Cove Springs.

• Martin Miller, the director of government affairs for the Clay County District Schools, says the district will receive a 5% increase in state funding for each student after working closely with the legislative delegation and other counties.

• Dorothy Holt, the Clay County Supervisor of Elections, says she won’t run for a fourth term.

40 years ago, 1986

• Rep. Don Fuqua of Jacksonville, who represented western Clay County, says he will leave Congress to become the president of the trade group Aerospace Industries Association of America.

• The committee, The Citizens for Single District, collects signed petitions to allow voters to decide whether county commissioners should be elected by district or by a countywide method.

• Clay County District Schools joins 21 other counties to sue the state, citing an inequity in funding distribution. Officials claimed the county was shorted $22 million since 1978.
