• Voters in Orange Park and Keystone Heights elect three newcomers onto their City Councils. John C. Hauber unseated Roland Mastandrea and Susana Thompson beat Virginia Hall in Orange Park, while Bobby Brown turned away Deirdre Murphy after incumbent Stephen O. Hart decided not to run in Keystone Heights.

• A record 148,000 attended the Clay County Agricultural Fair despite safety protocols for the COVID-19 pandemic, beating the 2019 record of 135,000.

• The county still needs to vaccinate another 44,000 residents to reach herd immunity against the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Clay County Florida Department of Health Administrator Heather Huffman.

• The Clay County Sheriff’s Office eases mental stress at jail with a gray Labradoodle station dog.

• A new ADA playground at Spring Park allows all children to have fun, including those with disabilities.

10 years ago, 2016

• The Clay County School District’s Career and Technical Education program receives $1 million in funding from the state.

• Baptist Clay received the state’s first certification as an Acute Stroke Ready Hospital for a free-standing emergency center.

• Mackenzie Clark, a junior at Middleburg High, competed in the Down Under Sports East Conference Golf Tournament in Australia.

• Penney Retirement Community celebrates its 90th anniversary with a dinner and music under the Oaks reception.

• Clay High wins a coin flip in a three-way tie with Ridgeview and Ponte Vedra to earn the No. 1 seed for the District 4-6A baseball tournament.

20 years ago, 2006

• Students from Orange Park Christian Academy were surprised during an after-show tour at Medieval Times when a horse got spooked and bolted. Fortunately, nobody was injured.

• Congressman Cliff Stearns planned town meetings in Argyle, Middleburg and Green Cove Springs.

• Lakeside Junior High’s Joey Williams is a finalist for Florida School-Related Employee of the Year.

• American Access Technologies, which employees more than 100 people and designs and manufactures zone cabling and wireless enclosures, wins the Clay County Chamber of Commerce’s Industry of the Quarterly Award.
