• A yearling Bald Eagle that attempted to fly between two electrical power transmission lines leading to a home on Ron Road sparks a two-acre grass fire that was quickly extinguished by Clay County Fire Rescue.

• County Commissioners will consider drafting an ordinance similar to one in Duval County that would require door-to-door solicitors to obtain a permit before going to neighborhoods.

 • Country singer Roy Clark headlines the entertainment at the Clay County Agricultural Fair.

10 years ago, 2016

• The meeting between the Clay County School Board and the teachers' union regarding teacher contracts becomes heated after the school board voted 3-2 to deny a magistrate’s report that would have given teachers a pay raise.

• Clay High’s Andy Toelken wins the $1,000 John C. Tindall Endowed Scholarship, and he will use it toward his business management studies at the University of Missouri.

• Clay High posts a 9-8 upset against Ponte Vedra in a key district softball game, as the Blue Devils rallied from a 5-1 deficit, then hit a game-winning, bases-loaded single from Jessica Powell in the seventh inning.

20 years ago, 2006

• The Clay County Board of County Commissioners votes 3-1 to support the Florida Department of Transportation’s southerly route for the First Coast Expressway that would run west of Green Cove Springs and cross the St. Johns River near the current Shands Bridge.

• Realco of Jacksonville demolishes the fourth and final metal grain silo inside the Orange Park South subdivision near Doctors Inlet to make way for a $7 million shopping park planned by Business Condos USA.

30 years ago, 1996

• Clay County school teachers become outraged after the school superintendent and school board allowed a student who was caught with a gun on campus to return to classes.

• Orange Park Kiwanis members raise $14,000 to build Phase 3 of the playground at Clarke Park on Kingsley Avenue as Phase 1 was dedicated and opened.

40 years ago, 1986

• In presenting a new five-year facilities plan to the school board, Robert Paterson opposes the plan, saying new classrooms should be built before new physical education facilities are built.

• A group called Middleburg Citizens for Responsible Growth, Inc. files a lawsuit seeking to half plans to expand a 3,200-foot-long air strip on grounds the strip infringed on their property rights.
