• The Clay County Sheriff’s Office and Drug Enforcement Agency arrest Nicholas Mattox and Keith Williams, both of Middleburg, and they are sentenced to federal prison after they were caught with 20 pounds of methamphetamine.

• More than two dozen school district educators share $20,000 given by the Clay Education Foundation and the Community First Cares Foundation.

• After 48 years of being based in Green Cove Springs, Challenge Enterprises moves into its new headquarters on Kingsley Avenue in Orange Park. The nonprofit that provides employment opportunities for those living with differences and disabilities will maintain its facility in Green Cove Springs.

10 years ago, 2015

• Members of the Clay Educational Support Professionals Association picket in Green Cove Springs to demand “livable wages” after negotiations between the union and the school district reach an impasse.

• The Board of County Commissioners are asked to consider where residents can keep their boats and recreational vehicles as they consider changes to the Branan Field Master Plan.

• Twenty-five Navy Junior ROTC freshmen cadets from Ridgeview High win the Color Guard competition and finish second in Armed Basic Drill at the Edward White High Drill Meet.

20 years ago, 2005

• A Clay County Sheriff’s Office dragnet aimed at halting speeding along U.S. Highway 17 on Fleming Island the last week of October ends with more than 200 speeding tickets issued to drivers.

• A CCSO drug sting held in a fake tire and wheel store dubbed Chrome Stopper nets 28 drug arrests. The operation, which captured each undercover drug transaction on audio and video, took months to plan and carry out.

• Sheriff Rick Beseler suspends CCSO Deputy Christopher Ruby for three days without pay after an internal investigation found Ruby had issued multiple speeding tickets using a handheld laser detection device without agency authorization.

30 years ago, 1995

• Faced with running over capacity by as many as 50 inmates a day, Clay County Sheriff Scott Lancaster considers housing inmates in the Bradford County Jail under a temporary contract for $27.50 a day for each inmate.

• Lancaster also presents a $2.5 million bill to the Board of County Commissioners for a new 800-megahertz radio communications system to be purchased from Johnson Communications.

• The Florida Department of Transportation begins a $10.7 million project to widen Blanding Boulevard from two to three lanes in each direction from Kingsley Avenue to Knight Boxx Road.

40 years ago, 1985

• The Board of County Commissioners give real estate developer Larry Nichols the go-ahead to build 430 single-family homes on 230 acres just west of Foxridge, near Blanding Boulevard, despite protests from area residents.

• The Clay County Sheriff’s Of­fice continue to search for leads into the slaying of Debra E. Dye, 38, of Maxville, who was found shot to death in her home one Sunday after attending church.

• Navy Lt. Cmdr. Charles S. Young of Orange Park receives the Association of Naval Aviation award for outstanding achievement in maritime patrol aviation.
