Five years ago, 2020

• The city council is interested in turning the volunteer fire department building into the home of a Clay County Sheriff’s Office sub-station, a legacy memorial, training facility and heritage gallery.

• Drivers on I-295 West Beltway will see multi-lane closures the next two weekends as crews restripe portions of Buckman Bridge as the state moves into a new phase of construction to include an emergency shoulder. At times, when traffic volumes are low, only one lane of the bridge will be operational during the restriping activities.

• Florida’s gasoline prices fell six cents a gallon last week and are likely to continue to fall amid concerns that the coronavirus will reduce global demand for petroleum products such as jet fuel and gasoline.

10 years ago, 2015

• Three, possibly four, gunmen enter the front of­fice of a Clay County public school opening ­ re and killing untold numbers of victims and wounding others before help arrives. This imaginary scenario played out March 13 at Keystone Heights High School in hopes of preparing law enforcement, fire and rescue and school and health department officials in the event such a horrid act would ever take place in Clay County.

• In the wake of controversial trials that garnered national attention, a University of North Florida poll conducted in February shows State Attorney Angela Corey has a 51 percent disapproval rating. A professor behind the poll said Corey’s public image is poor because she is seen as overcharging some of those she has prosecuted.

• Sharing the story of the Clay County Agricultural Fair with the community and its partners is key to a strong and successful fair. Pete Sutton, fair association manager, shared the fair’s story with the Green Cove Springs City Council and council meeting attendees on March 17.

20 years ago, 2005

• Police say nine junior and senior students are suspected of entering Clay High School on Sunday, March 6, and using school fire extinguishers to spray down the cafeteria, rendering it useless for the Monday FCAT exams.

• Challenger Robert Standifer won the District Two Town Council seat in orange Park’s election held Tuesday.

• Clay County Drug Task Force officers were joined by CCSO Street Crimes detectives and by CCSO Warrants Unit deputies to execute a weekend drug suspect round-up.
