Five years ago, 2020

• Susan Elizabeth Mauldin, the Fleming Island woman who’s been missing for more than three months, was found buried in garbage bags in a South Georgia landfill. A Fleming Island handyman, Corey Binderin, was charged with her murder.

• The Board of County Commission tentatively agreed to start a $130 million road project called First Coast Connection. The project to fix deficient roads is to be funded by selling bonds.

• The Keystone Heights City Council mulled the idea of starting a police department before deciding to pay for additional deputies to be assigned to the area from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

10 years ago, 2015

• The community comes together for a candlelight vigil for 13-year-old Gianna Asencio, who was struck and killed by a car on Eagle Harbor Parkway at Woodlake Drive.

• Fleming Island High’s Jose Rivera finished second and earned $1,000 at the Clay County Science Fair after designing a vehicle that can get supplies to the International Space Station with greater ease using a spinning rocket.

• A record number of visitors attended the 11th Annual Yesterdays Festival at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park to raise money for the park that the state won’t fund.

20 years ago, 2005

• Members of the Clay County Narcotics Task Force and the Green Cove Springs Police Department arrested six people on drug charges. They seized an undisclosed amount of crack cocaine, cocaine and marijuana from a home on Lemon Street.

• Officials celebrate the opening of the new City Hall on the site of the 1900-era Qi-Si-Sana Hotel. The building was built using many of the same design elements of the hotel.

30 years ago, 1995

• The Green Cove Springs City Council voted 4-0 to appoint Randy Brunson to fill the vacated seat by Sandra Dunnavant.

• Engineering firm Camp, Dresser and McKee presented the Town of Orange Park with a $3.2 million plan to renovate the town’s three aging wastewater treatment facilities.

• The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office investigated the death of Michael Renardo Clements, 22, of Orange Park, after his body was found on Kilcullen Lane on the Westside.

40 years ago, 1985

• The Orange Park Police arrested Michael Singleton for aggravated assault following a high-speed chase through Duval and Clay counties. During the chase, Singleton rammed his car into two OPPD cruisers.

• The Florida Highway Patrol reported the death of Russell David Ross, 23, of Orange Park. FHP said Ross crashed his motorcycle into a concrete building after failing to maneuver a turn on Blanding Boulevard.

• Clay County Superintendent Ann Wiggins planned to return local high schools to a six-period school day. The plan was welcome news by district principals.
