• Clay County Superintendent Addison Davis was a unanimous choice by the Hillsborough County School District, the nation’s seventh-largest school district in the Tampa area, to become its new Superintendent.
• Two bear cub brothers found in Leesburg were set free at Camp Blanding by the Florida Wildlife Commission.
• Adams Homes of Northwest Florida purchases land off Russell Road in Green Cove Springs to build an additional 43 homes. The land includes the famous lot where Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Hell House once stood. The legendary Southern Rock band wrote their first three albums at Hell House on the bank of Peters Creek, including their iconic hits like “Free Bird,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “Tuesday’s Gone” and “Simple Man.”

• The Keystone Heights Volunteer Fire Department notifies the Clay County Board of Commission for a “breach of contract” because it has suffered “financial hardship” after the county stopped dispatching 911 calls to the volunteer department.
• Fleming Island eighth-grader Justin Boothe finds a rare Nazi service medal hidden in a piano his family bought in a Goodwill store.
• Superintendent Charlie Van Zant said he will appoint Diane Kornegay as the Deputy Superintendent when Denise Adams retires.
20 years ago, 2005
• Officials in Green Cove Springs are preparing to dedicate its newly built City Hall.
• Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler released 2004 crime statistics that reveal robberies decreased by 24.5%. He also reported there were six murders in the county that year.
30 years ago, 1995
• Charles Davis, 27, of Orange Park, died when his car crossed the center line on Blanding Boulevard near County Road 215 and side-swiped two other cars before slamming head-on into a third car.
• The BCC prepared a curfew ordinance for children younger than 16, BCC members wanted to review a draft of the ordinance and prepare for possible legal ramifications.
• The Clay County Sheriff’s Office investigated two armed robberies in Green Cove Springs that occurred during a four-hour timeframe. In both cases, the robber got away with less than $10.
40 years ago, 1985
• Jenkins Construction Company was awarded a $218,898 contract to renovate the Clay County Jail in the wake of a 1984 State Fire Marshall inspection that suggested the jail install fireproof doors and a fire sprinkler system.
• Edna Hayes, 91, died in a house fire at her home on Palmetto Avenue in Green Cove Springs.
• The City of Green Cove Springs hosted 63 guests from the Northeast Florida League of Cities at the Bayard Lodge owned by J.P. Hall Jr.
