• Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said the murder of Roseann Kasama Welsh, 35, of Middleburg a “crime of opportunity.” Donald Hugh Davidson, 34, a neighbor who was recently released from prison for rape, was charged with her killing.

• Clay County Dr. Roland Powers donates his $500 HCA First Humanitarian Award to the Navy Marines Corps Society.

• Four Ridgeview High students attend the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Students in Washington, D.C., hoping to explore the medical field following graduation.

20 years ago, 2004

• The sheriff’s office said Ronald McKenna Sr., 54, of Keystone Heights, died of a heart attack after he accidentally shot his son, Ronald McKenna Jr., 33, after mistaking him for a deer.

• St. Johns Country Day School announced that Gregory L. Foster will succeed Stephen F. Russey as the fifth headmaster in the fall.

• The Clay County School Board prepared for a Dec. 16 public hearing concerning redistricting for the boundaries of Wilkinson and Lake Asbury junior highs.

30 years ago, 1994.

• The Florida Technology Association selected Wilkinson Junior High for the 1995 International Technology Education Program of the Year and awarded the school a $13,000 grant to construct an interactive science lab.

• A six-person jury convicted Moody Wayne Collins of attempted second-degree murder for the shooting death of his 13-year-old son.

• The Orange Park Medical Center announced the creation of a new inpatient psychiatric department that offered partial hospitalization for patients in need of mental health services.

40 years ago, 1984

• The 1st District Court of Appeals in Tallahassee ruled the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco failed to give the Village Saloon and Scottish Inn appropriate hearings regarding fines levied for breaking laws regarding closing time.

• The Orange Park Town Council voted to pursue a $575,000 community development block grant from the Florida Department of Community Affairs.

• The Florida Highway Patrol said Steven W. Mills, 27, of Orange Park, was on U.S. Highway 17 when his car crossed the center line and ran into a tractor-trailer.
