• Orange Park Town Council somberly goes through its meeting on Nov. 5, just days after councilman Ron Raymond dies unexpectedly. The council will have 45 days to replace him.

• The Orange Park Council backed up its tree sanctuary commitment by establishing its tree removal fee at $165 an inch.

• The Thought Exchange program promotes the exchange of ideas between Clay High students and Superintendent Addison Davis.

10 years ago, 2014

• St. Johns River State College creates Clay County District School’s Work Ready Program to help students find careers.

• Camp Cadet’s one-week, tuition-free program helps students in Middleburg gain confidence through physical training.

• The Board of County Commissioners approve a mega-sports complex to spend some of its $20 million in unspent bond money.

20 years ago, 2004

• Clay County voters approve single-member county commission districts.

• Joel Hocker and Chad Sherwood were arrested in Orange Park after they shot at a Fish and Wildlife Commission officer with a paintball gun after he returned from work.

• Clay High teacher Steven Amburgey competed at the Florida Finals of the Colgate Country Showdown at the Jacksonville Fair.

30 years ago, 1994

• Authorities said they are still investigating the unsolved 1993 shootings of two Orange Park deer hunters, Don Hill and Gregory Allen Wood.

• The BCC voted 4-1 to spend $500,000 to purchase the former Southeast Bank in Orange Park for Tax Collector and Clerk of Court offices.

• The Town of Orange Park moved into its new Town Hall on the corner of Park Avenue and Kingsley Avenue after the old town hall was found to be riddled with asbestos.

40 years ago, 1984

• Joseph Tracy Mattox, 20, was shot to death in the head while standing at the American Caribe Lines dock at the Clay Ports in Green Cove Springs. The Green Cove Springs Police Department and Clay County Sheriff’s Office said they initially had no leads.

• CCSO Sheriff Jennings Murrhee said a man, Peter Allen Jordan, 32, of Green Cove Springs, who escaped from the Clay County Jail, was a person of interest in the shooting death of Joseph Tracy Mattox a few days earlier in Green Cove Springs.
