The beauty and necessity of change: Lessons from autumn

Posted

It’s that time of year again. I joke with all those folks who go up to the mountains to see the changing of the leaves. I ask what kind of person pays good money for a cabin to watch trees die? Obviously one who truly appreciates change. There is something beautiful about watching a green leaf turn golden, loosen its hold on the branch and gently fall to the ground.

Every autumn, nature puts on an amazing display of color, reminding us that change is an unavoidable part of life. Yet, while we admire the changing seasons, we sometimes struggle when change comes into our own lives.

We find comfort in the familiar. We cherish our routines, our relationships and the seasons when life seems predictable. But life changes. Children grow up, careers end, loved ones pass away and new chapters begin. Sometimes we welcome these changes; other times, we face them with uncertainty and fear. Perhaps autumn has a lesson for us all: change can be beautiful, and it is necessary for our growth.

God has a purpose for every season

Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”

God designed His creation with seasons. Spring brings new life, summer brings growth, autumn brings harvest and winter provides a time of rest. Each season serves a purpose, even when we cannot immediately see it.

Consider the trees. As autumn arrives, they release their leaves in preparation for the colder months ahead. What appears to be a loss is actually part of a natural process that helps sustain life.

We experience similar seasons in our own lives. There are times of excitement and opportunity, and there are times of disappointment, uncertainty and sorrow. We may not understand why a particular season has come, but we can trust the God who walks with us through it.

God desires to change us from within

Change is not only something that happens around us; it is something God desires to accomplish within us. Romans 12:2 instructs us, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

As Christians, we should never stop growing in our faith. God wants to deepen our compassion, strengthen our trust, correct our attitudes and help us become more like Jesus Christ. The good news is that God does not leave us to make these changes alone. He patiently works in our hearts, guiding us one step at a time.

Our seasons change, but God remains faithful

Perhaps you are facing a season you never expected. Maybe retirement has changed your routine, your children have left home, your health has changed or you are grieving someone you love. You may wonder what purpose remains for you in this new chapter.

Remember, a changing season does not mean God has finished working in your life.

Malachi 3:6 declares, “For I am the LORD, I change not.”

Our circumstances may change, our strength may weaken and our plans may take a different direction, but God's faithfulness remains constant. He can still use our experiences, our wisdom, our prayers and our love to make a difference in the lives of others.

As autumn paints the landscape with beautiful colors, let it remind us that change need not be feared. Some seasons teach us to grow, others teach us to trust, and still others teach us to release what we can no longer hold.

Whatever season you are living in today, remember that God is still at work. Welcome His direction, trust His timing and allow Him to shape your heart.

The beauty of autumn reminds us that even when life changes, there is still beauty to discover, purpose to fulfill, and hope to embrace in the hands of our unchanging God.
