RiverFest saluted the fallen on Memorial Day, ushered the start of summer
GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Known as the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day is first and foremost a day of remembrance for fallen men and women who gave their lives to protect our nation.
Our nation's martyrs, in every branch of the military serving in each armed conflict, were honored before any festivities kicked off at 36th annual RiverFest at Spring Park on Memorial Day.
Hundreds of veterans and their families were moved by the ceremony, which paid tribute to the ultimate sacrifice made for freedom. Each veteran was honored with an American flag. The emotional ceremony was capped off with a flyover overhead that took off from Haller Airpark.
Food trucks, live music and the Kids Market, a farmers market run entirely by children, were some of the highlights during the day. A finale of fireworks crackled and electrified the evening, the city's last salute on Memorial Day.
Other activities included a watermelon-eating contest, the Rubber Duck race and the firework show over the St. Johns River featuring 1,600 shells.
