Penney Retirement Community tees up for a good cause

PENNEY FARMS — Continuing on with its centennial year celebrations, Penney Retirement Community hosted its annual Golf Tournament on Friday, Sept. 16.

Residents and community partners were invited to show off their skills and give back to a good cause. The money raised will benefit Penney's two main funds, the Residents' Aid Fund, providing monthly financial aid to residents in need, and the James Cash Penney Legacy Fund, providing purposeful retirement living to those who serve as volunteers and in nonprofit fields.

Golfers participated in Captain's Choice within Penney's nine-hole synthetic greens golf course, the only one in Florida. Special guest Charles Raulerson, PGA-certified golf professional and the owner Fleming Island Golf Club, was also present. Members of the Florida Hickory Society, a regional group dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditional game of hickory, also played with pre-1935 wood-shafted clubs.

Following a morning on the course, participants later enjoyed lunch and a raffle at Barrows Hall. For the tournament, first place went to Jerry Veldman, John Veldman and Mike Fletcher; second place went to Bob Hodges, Bob Lindsey and Katherine Wills; third place went to Steve Jones, Bill Lawton and Dennis McDermott; and fourth place went to Bill Kelley, Paul Akers and Gordy Peterson.
