PENNEY FARMS – JC Penney Memorial Scenic Highway Historic 5K. In the 1920s, JC Penney bought 120,000 acres of farmland southwest of Green Cove Springs. He brought homesteaders to the land to create an experimental farming community by providing them with land, training and equipment. To celebrate, they established a competitive event — the annual 5K run — through the picturesque community that continues to be celebrated in Penney Farms.
There were 177 runners.
The top 10 finishers all came from Florida State College at Jacksonville. The winner was 18-year-old Benjamin Hale, who had a winning time of 5:30, one second ahead of 27-year-old teammate Gershom Allen.
Lexi Harris won the women’s title at 6:31, with Maryanne Holtz in second at 6:49.
