Botched punt, strip-sack put Blue Devils in early ditch in a 37-13 loss

ST AUGUSTINE - The Clay Blue Devils faced an uphill battle from the opening minutes Thursday night, and they could never fully recover, falling 37-13 to the No. 1 Class 4A St. Augustine Yellow Jackets in front of a very vocal St. Augustine home fan base.

The loss dropped Clay to 1-1 in District 4-4A play. The Golden Eagles beat Orange Park in one of two in-county district rivalry games. Middleburg beat Ridgeview in the other game.

Clay faced early adversity from the opening minutes. On the Blue Devils' opening punt, a botched snap deep in their own territory gave St. Augustine prime field position and it quickly resulted in the game's first touchdown.

Moments later, Clay's offense suffered another setback when quarterback Landon Martin was dropped with a strip sack. The fumble was recovered and converted into another St. Augustine score. Before many fans had settled into their seats, the Yellow Jackets had built a 14-0 advantage.

"If we convert a couple of the fourth downs and third-and-short situations, and we don't fumble a punt and get strip-sacked, maybe it's a different game," said head coach Jeff Gierke. "We gave up too many points."

Facing an early deficit against one of Florida's top programs, Clay struggled to find consistency throughout the first half. St. Augustine took advantage of strong field position and capitalized on Clay's mistakes, controlling the tempo and extending its lead.

Despite the disappointing outcome, the Blue Devils continued to compete and found several bright spots. Martin eventually scored twice on runs from the pocket near midfield to keep the Blue Devils on the scoreboard.

Defensively, Clay received a momentum-boosting play from defensive back Matt Jones, who came away with an interception to halt a St. Augustine drive. The takeaway showcased the Blue Devils' resilience, and it provided one of the team's biggest highlights.

Offensively, Landon Martin was Clay's standout performer. The senior quarterback finished with 120 rushing yards and both of the Blue Devils' touchdowns, consistently running hard against a physical defense. He accounted for both of Clay's touchdowns.

While Clay was unable to overcome the early 14-point hole, the Blue Devils continued to battle until the final whistle. The loss dropped Clay to 4-2 overall, but the team will look to learn from the mistakes that proved costly.

For Clay, the biggest lesson was the importance of limiting self-inflicted errors. The Blue Devils showed flashes of competitiveness when they avoided turnovers, and they executed on offense. But the early special teams mishap and turnover created a deficit that was simply too much to overcome.

Now entering a bye week, Clay will turn its attention to a showdown with Fleming Island on Friday, Oct. 9, hoping to build on the positive performances from Martin, the defensive unit and by cleaning up the mistakes that ultimately decided the game at St. Augustine.
