Mid-year resolutions: A Spiritual Check-Up

Posted

Six months ago, millions of people made resolutions. Lose weight. Save money. Read more. Eat less. Maybe you were one of them.

But here we are—halfway through the year—and many of those resolutions have quietly slipped into the rearview mirror. Gym memberships go unused. Prayer journals sit half written. Old habits sneak back in. Life gets busy, and intentions fade.

So where does that leave the Christian who has made those “Spiritual Resolutions?”

As believers, we understand that discipline and commitment matter— not just for our waistlines or calendars, but also for the Soul. The Bible says in 1 Timothy 4:7-8, “Exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things..."

Mid-year is a perfect time to ask: Am I growing and developing in godliness? Let’s do a quick Spiritual Check-Up.

1. Reevaluate Your Spiritual Priorities

Jesus taught, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God…” (Matt. 6:33). Are we doing that? Half a year has passed. Has your Bible time been consistent? Are you part of a local church, actively serving and being sharpened by the body of Christ? If the answer is “not really,” now is the time to restart. God's mercy is new every morning—and every July, too.

2. Replace Regret with Resolve

The enemy would love to keep you stuck in guilt over what you didn’t do. But conviction from the Holy Spirit is meant to drive us to action. Philippians 3:13-14 says, “Forgetting those things which are behind... I press toward the mark.” Don't beat yourself up for past failures. Instead, ask God for fresh grace to press forward.

3. Recommit to the Word

Too many believers treat the Bible like a January resolution—passionate for a few weeks, then forgotten. But Psalm 1 tells us the blessed man “delights in the law of the Lord... and in His law doth he meditate day and night.” Mid-year is a good time to recenter on God’s Word. Maybe start a short Bible reading plan for the summer. Join a study group. Make the Word your daily bread again.

4. Refresh Your Witness

When was the last time you shared the gospel? Or even just invited someone to church? One of Jesus' final commands was to go and make disciples (Matt. 28:19-20). As you re-evaluate your goals, include your role as a witness. Don’t wait for the perfect opportunity. Pray for boldness and step out in faith.

Final Thought:
This mid-year point is not a time for shame but for sharpening. Don’t let the world define your success by how well you stuck to a gym routine. Measure success by your obedience to Christ and your growth in holiness. Let the second half of this year be marked not by self-improvement, but Spirit-empowerment.

“He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)
