ORANGE PARK - the Green Cove Springs Junior High School Lady Cougars won the Northeast Florida Athletic Conference championship with a 26-19 win over the Lake Asbury Tigers Wednesday at Lakeside Junior High School.
The Cougars trailed 12-10 at half and outscored the Tigers 16 to 7 in the second half using a full court man to man deny press.
“It was such a physical game against a very talented and well coached Lake Asbury team,” said Green Cove head coach Bruce Sprately. “The girls had a determined look in their eyes and they played the hardest 12 minutes they had ever played in the second half. We had a determined team that simply refused to lose.”
The teams split their two regular season meetings by double digits with the home team winning each game. The championship game was hosted by Lakeside junior high and Sprately knew the final game would have to be their best effort of the season.
“We finished 13-1 and that early season loss to Lake Asbury fueled us the rest of the year,” said Sprately. “We looked inward and asked ourselves what we needed to do to make sure we didn’t lose again. It was actually a blessing because the loss brought us closer as a team, it fueled our motivation and we were just determined to be Conference Champions.”
