ORLANDO - Fleming Island's girls and boys tennis teams' seasons have both ended with top singles Zach Hyatt and Katie Baird both finishing up in the quarterfinal rounds of the singles championship brackets.
In doubles, Fleming Island's boys duo of Hyatt and Kesl Cumpstone lost in the Class 3A championship match in two overtime sets, 7-5, 7-6.
Hyatt, a state runnerup last year as a freshman, was given a BYE in round one of the singles Class 3A tournament, then lost a 6-3, 6-3 quarterfinals to Wil Nguyen of Lake Buena Vista High in Orlando. Nguyen was part of the Class 3A doubles championship in 2024.

Also in 2024, Lake Buena Vista won the singles state title with Lake Buena Vista's Peter Tran, a Rollins College commit, defeating Hyatt 6-1, 6-2 in the singles final.

In 2025, Nguyen eventually lost a tiebreaker semifinal to Luca Torres-Sigler of Spoto High School in Riverview. Gabe Garcia of Leon won the Class 3A singles title over Torres-Sigler, 6-3, 6-3.
In the girls singles, Baird, who teamed up on Sunday to win the Tennis4Cancer doubles tournament in Eagle Harbor, also received an opening round bye, but lost in her quarterfinal to Yarlin Mendoza of True North Classical Academy in Cape Coral 6-1, 6-1. Mendoza eventually lost in the semifinals to Abra Boonswang of Palm Beach Gardens 6-1, 6-0, with Boonswang winning the singles title.
Nease High's girls team eventually won the Class 3A title. Nease top singles Kylie Kochis was Class 3A runnerup to Boonswang.

In doubles, Hyatt teamed with Kesl Cumpstone, got an opening round bye, won an overtime match over Jayden Dyer and Gavin Hoffman of Jensen Beach High, 6-3, 3-6, 10-3, and a semifinal match over Luca Torres-Siglar and Brady Garbett of Spoto High School, 6-4, 6-1.
In their finals match, Hyatt and Cumpston lost to Eric Ormsby and Hudson Taylor of Gulf Breeze High School.
In girls doubles, Baird and partner Tessa Wilson won their opener 6-4, 6-4 over Gemma Plumb and Isabelle Rose of Fort Myers before losing in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-0 to Mairangel Pernia and Alexis Bryant of Lake Buena Vista High of Orlando, the eventual doubles Class 3A runnerups.
In Class 1A, St. Johns Country Day School's Ethan Kent, in singles, received a first round bye, but lost in his quarterfinal to Logan Speyer of The First Academy in Orlando, 6-2, 6-2.

In Class 1A girls singles, St. Johns Country Day School's Calli Berrang was attempting a two state title double after being on the St. Johns girls soccer state champion team, but fell in her opening round in overtime, 4-6, 6-2, 10-12 to Lexie Bursa of Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale.

In Class 1A doubles, Kent and partner Mason Vogt lost 6-2, 6-0 in their quarterfinal match to Lorenzo Lopez and Oscar Bergier of Miami Country Day School, the No. 2 seed who lost in semifinals.
In the region brackets, Fleming Island's boys' team lost to Nease, 4-0 and Ridgeview lost to Ponte Vedra 7-0 with the St. Johns boys losing 7-0 to P.K. Yonge.
In girls regions, Fleming Island lost to Ponte Vedra with Ridgeview losing to Nease in Class 3A while, in Class 4A, Oakleaf lost to
Spruce Creek.
