FLEMING ISLAND— It was a happy Friday as Clay County fathers took the reins in getting their child to school on Sept. 19.
The school district celebrated its annual “Dads Take Your Child to School Day,” with thousands of fathers joining their children during their early walk or drive to school.
The morning, filled with breakfast, smiles and laughter, is sponsored annually by the Florida Department of Education to recognize the roles of dads or father figures in the lives of students.
At Fleming Island Elementary, they celebrated with a Donuts with Dad event. Faculty invited fathers and children to pick up a donut or two, mingle in the front yard and take pictures next to a decorated set up.
“As you can tell we have such a huge turnout,” said Principal Mallory McConnell. “So, I think this morning we ordered about 480 donuts. So, it’s a wonderful celebration. Almost all were gone.”
For some, it was their first Donuts with Dad, while others looked forward to another installment of the event. Nevertheless, the long line of fathers only proved the school’s goal of keeping parents engaged and welcomed in the educational process.
“We get so busy sometimes in our day-to-day roles that I think people think ‘Oh, well, moms are the ones that bring students to school,’ but we’re in a day and age where both moms and dads are actively playing a role in their lives,” McConnell said.
