ORANGE PARK - With four goals by senior Kirra Dodson, two in each half, the Clay High girls soccer team overcame a 3-2 halftime gap to Middleburg High to win a 6-4 district opener clash on cold, wintry night at Middleburg High School.
With early goals from Middleburg's Olivia Rigazzi, Ruby Owen and Jordyn Lewis, the Lady Broncos led through the half, but Dodson answered just before halftime to close the lead to 3-2.
In the second half, Dodson found her spots to give Clay a second shot at a district title and a second region playoff run; region finals last year.
Clay advances to play against top seed Fleming Island on Monday with Orange Park, the two seed, playing Columbia, a 5-0 winner over Ridgeview in their tournament opener.
In boys soccer, Ridgeview toppled a game Orange Park team, 3-1, also on Thursday to advance to a Saturday afternoon of semifinals at Fleming Island. Clay will play Columbia, a 2-0 winner over Middleburg, at Noon while Ridgeview will play top seed Fleming Island at 2 p.m.
More boys action will be in the upcoming week with Keystone Heights and St. Johns Country Day School in both boys and girls action.
