GREEN COVE SPRINGS - Amid the threat of a morning downpour, Whistling Death 5K/10K race director Chris Rodatz was a little worried about the muddiness of his cross country trek in the area around the Military Museum of North Florida before firing off the starter's gun.

"It was pouring down rain when we got here at 5:30 a.m. So, to see nearly 300 runners still come out to this race is encouraging," said Rodatz. "It's pretty muddy out there."

With times a bit slower than normal and with plenty of muddy running shoes crossing the finish line, it was Clay High cross country runner William Rios, 14, winning the 5K title in 19 minutes, 57 seconds and 26-year-old Lyric'Marie Wells bounding across the finish line first in 25-29 in 25:30. Marie Wells was 13th overall in the 216 finishers.

In the 10K, which took runners further into the slop around the museum camp, David Joslyn, 32, won in a quick 44:17 ahead of Craig Herzog, 51, in 47:00.
In the womens race, Rylie Hirst, 30, won in 52:04 in 13th overall just ahead of two chasers—Jordyne Denny, 14, in 52:27 for 15th overall and Sheena Greene, 39, in 53:19 in 16th place. There were 96 runners in the 10K race.
