MIDDLEBURG - Middleburg High football running back Gino Addison sought to reach 2,000 yards rushing in his senior campaign for the Broncos' football program and he's halfway there in a season of workhorse ball carrying for coach Ryan Wolfe.
"When I came here, coach Wolfe had already told me about his history of running backs at Middleburg and I wanted to be a part of that," said Addison, who finished with 1,100 yards and 18 touchdowns and a first round region playoff game after leaving Bradford County football in his junior season. "Everything at Middleburg is built around a strong running game and I think I got some of that."
For Wolfe and athletic director John Stilianou, Addison optimized his stay at Middleburg both on the field and in the classroom.
"A lot of blood, a lot of sweat, a lot of tears, get an athlete to this level," Stilianou said. "I don't want to talk about his football, but his 3.5 grade point average and his preparation in general for all phases of his life. Everything Gino does is for a next level opportunity."
Addison's biggest game came in the biggest game of the Bronco season with a 285-yard rushing effort with four touchdowns in Middleburg's overtime win over Beachside High that secured the region playoff spot for the Broncos.
"The team needed me to be big," said Addison, who had five 100-plus games for the Broncos.
Wolfe noted that Addison was one of his favorite guys in practice.
"This guy attacked every practice rep like it was his last one," Wolfe said. "If I get a few more kids like Gino to coach, we'd win a lot of football games. I loved every second we got to spend together."
Wolfe made a call to the offensive coordinator at North Carolina Central University and simply told him he had a great running back and a great kid.
"I called offensive coach Matt Leone at NCCU and said, 'Hey man, I got a back,'" said Wolfe, who has kicker Kaleb Robison already at NCCU as a top kicker in the NCAA. "'I know he is going to make that program stronger.'"
North Carolina Central finished at 8-4 with Robison a first team All MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) selection. Robison, a sophomore, was part of a 10-player selection team who were first team All MEAC selections. Robison finished with 18 field goals including six games and three field goals against Norfolk State.
