Five years ago, 2020

• Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed David Broskie as the interim Clay County Superintendent of Schools on Monday. This appointment is effective March 2.

• Gov. DeSantis announced Feb. 20 he is awarding $250,000 to the city of Green Cove Springs for electrical line infrastructure upgrades through the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund. The City of Green Cove Springs will also match the grant with $50,000 and is prepared to immediately begin work on what is projected to be a six-month project.

• Outgoing Superintendent of Clay County District Schools Addison Davis was energetic and charismatic in his final State of Schools address before moving to the same position in Hillsborough County.

 

10 years ago, 2015

• To attract more volunteers who will assist in adopting more stray animals, a renewed push is on to get a new centrally located animal shelter in Clay County.

• Growing opiate addiction in Clay County has led a Jacksonville-based substance abuse and treatment agency to make plans to open a methadone treatment clinic in Orange Park.

• When Bi-Lo Holdings, which owns Winn-Dixie grocery stores, acquired Harveys Supermarkets last year, a domino effect was set in motion, leading to this riverside city losing its grocery store.

 

20 years ago, 2005

• When police responded to the 4300 block of a Middleburg residence on Feb. 24 to investigate a domestic battery incident, they ran into their suspect with a head-on crash.

• A primary area developer unveiled a new plan before the Green Cover Springs City Council at its regular meeting on Tuesday, March 1.

• Two Clay County political groups have officially endorsed Phyllis Vancas for Orange Park Town Council.
