GREEN COVE SPRINGS—Two shipments of pigs will be delivered to the Clay County Fairgrounds for this weekend’s Swine and Dine Derby. One will run laps for entertainment, and the other will be served as a barbecue dinner to raise money to support three local charities in a festive setting.

“We always laugh about that: the slow pigs aren’t the ones we cook,” said Catrine Fredikson, one of the organizers with the Rotary Clubs from Fleming Island and Green Cove Springs. “They will not be on the grill.”

The annual event is a major fundraiser to benefit AMI Kids, Challenge Enterprises and Seeds of Love. It mixes pig races, a BBQ dinner, live music with 5 Good Years, face painting, a 50/50 raffle, children’s games and activities. The fun starts at 4 p.m. and wraps up at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 at the gate.

The dinner menu includes smoked chicken, pork and sausage, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, cole slaw, hot dogs, cornbread, a roll, iced tea, lemonade, or water.

“We also will have a booze wagon ready to go,” Fredrikson said. Beer and wine tickets cost $5.

The fairgrounds will also host the Cars of Purpose’s Rev Out Cancer car show and car stereo competition earlier in the day, but that event will conclude at 3 p.m. According to Rotary member Lawrence Mangus, the county will direct Swine and Dine patrons to a parking lot off Springbank Road.

“It looks like it’s going to be a great weekend,” Mangus said. “I know ticket sales have been good. The weather’s supposed to be good. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
