Squeal deal: Crowd goes 'hog-wild' for Royal Racers

GREEN COVE SPRINGS — Rosaire’s Royal Racers have sprinted their way to the annual Clay County Agricultural Fair for years, hoping to make the crowd go "hog wild."

And this year is no different.

To start the approximately 20-minute show on Friday, April 4, an announcer got the seated crowd going by announcing the rules and expectations of the competition. The show consisted of three groups of five pigs, or "athletes." One at a time, each group of athletes are introduced by their breeds and clever names, including Britney Spare Rib, Pork Chop and Oscar Mayer.

They are then ushered into their starting enclosures ready to race.

With audience participation, the energetic, fast-talking announcer picked five of the best “hog-wild” audience members through a sea of flailing arms and loud cheers and assigned them to an athlete. The chosen ones were tasked with helping to cheer their pig to the finish line.

At the sound of the bugle horn and in the flash of an eye, the pigs then raced around the 180-foot, all-aluminum track.

The louder the contestant was, the more likely their pig was to win. Along with the winning pig being rewarded a treat, the winning audience member received a number of free prizes.

Since 1991, the family-owned company has traveled nationwide, making audiences happy as a pig in mud.

You can catch the free show in the E-Zone Daily Acts section of the fair during the following dates and times:
