FLEMING ISLAND – Members of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the county’s Special Olympics team challenged residents to show their support by digging deep with an extra tip last week during their Tip-A-Cop fundraiser.
The challenge was accepted. And then some.
Deputies and athletes collected $16,097.67 from Oct. 27-29 at the LongHorn Steakhouse, according to CCSO Lt. Zach Cox, Special Olympics Coordinator for the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
Counting the torch run, a previous Tip-A-Cop at Texas Roadhouse and other donations during the year, the Clay County Special Olympics team raised $38,837.67 to offset expenses for the 2026 Florida State Games at the Wide World of Sports near Walt Disney World in May.
“Thanks to the generous donations and support from everyone in our community during all of our 2025 fundraising events, this total of $38,837.67 makes it the largest monetary amount ever raised in Clay County Special Olympics history,” Cox said.
“All of these proceeds will be used to support our local Clay County Special Olympics athletes in their travel to and from the Special Olympic State Games, as well as the purchasing of uniforms, practice equipment, etc., for the various sports they participate in. As 2025 comes to a close, we hope for another record-breaking year in 2026.”
This year’s total shattered last year’s record donations by $7,616.67.
Tip-A-Cop involved athletes, deputies, Explorers and other volunteers to serve bread, water, soft drinks, coffee and tea and clear tables for tips while they assisted servers at the restaurant. Tips earned by law enforcement and athletes were separate from gratuities given to the servers.
