Speakers and recognition abound at Sheriff's NET meeting

Sheriff‘s NET of Orange Park on May 8 hosted several speakers who addressed the residents of Clay County, particularly those living in Orange Park and the surrounding areas.

The meeting opened with Wayne McKinney, Sheriff’s Office director of Patrol and Community Affairs, expressing his deep gratitude to the residents of Clay County for their support of law enforcement.

Scott Roberts presented challenge coins to all law enforcement personnel in honor of their service during Police Memorial Day in Clay County. National Police Week, or Law Enforcement Appreciation Week, is observed May 11-17.

"I just wanted to say that they wanted to recognize us for our work, and at the same time, we appreciate them because we're all part of the same community. We really are blessed to have such a great community and to be a part of it," said Sheriff Deputy Nathan Vore.

Orange Park Police Chief Randy Case addressed any concerns or questions from the residents about the town.

Sheriff's Deputy Det. Grubb then spoke to the audience about fraud prevention.

County Commissioner Jim Renninger provided updates on various projects in Clay County. First was the Lincoln Memorial University going on Wells Road, followed by the status of road construction projects.

Many residents inquired about the status of road improvements on Highway 220, Blanding Boulevard and Wells Road, and the Expressway. Renninger showed plans for upcoming construction on Blanding Blvd and Wells Road and noted that the Expressway in Green Cove Springs might open within the next 90 days, which would help alleviate traffic.

Commissioner Renninger also announced that the new animal shelter will break ground on May 27. Additionally, he informed the residents that the Orange Park Mall has been sold and will undergo renovations.

Lastly, he addressed concerns regarding the county's financial situation for the upcoming year. He emphasized that the loss of property taxes could significantly impact the fire and police departments. The County Commissioner mentioned that, at this time, the Fire Department is not considering implementing a Fire Assessment to help offset costs. The situation could result in serious financial consequences for the county if property taxes are lost.
