KISSIMMEE - St. Johns Country Day School seventh grader Bryce Fiore stormed the wrestling world Saturday with a ferocious first period to a 9-2 en route to a final 14-12 Knockout Christmas Invitational championship title at 113 pounds.
Wrestlers from all around the country competed in the Knockout tournament considered one of the most competitive high school tournaments nationwide.
For Fiore, the win came with wins of 14-1, 8-1 and 3-1 into the 113 semifinal where Fiore won 6-2 over Christopher Schnobrick of Olympic Heights High (third in FHSAA at 106 last year) to advance to the finals match.
Fiore's finals match was against Javen Russo of Troups High in Georgia, an upcoming Georgia powerhouse who was on the Georgia Elite United Middle School team.
On the girls side, Middleburg High senior 135 pound wrestler Sarah Walsh got to the finals before 5-2 in the championship match to Ella Hughes of Jefferson High in Georgia.
Walsh advanced into the 135 finals with a 9-6 win over third ranked Eysis Estes-Brinson of Miami Palmetto. Walsh will face Ella Hughes of Jefferson High in Georgia who beat Eduarda Franklin Soares of Freedom 3-0 to advance.
Walsh won her semifinal over third ranked in Class G Eysis Estes-Brinson of Miami Palmetto.
Walsh advanced with wins of 6-1, 6-1 and 9-6 over Estes-Brinson.
In the 140 bracket, Oakleaf High's Kailani Barrientos, third last year at state, lost 13-2 to Zoe Delgado, a freshman at Florida Christian School in Miami who was second at state last year.
Barrientos advanced to the semifinals with a familiar face in front of her in Miami—Southridge's A'Niyah Leon Goodrich. Barrientos beat Leon-Goodrich last year in the consolation semifinals 3-0 and repeated the 3-0 win on Friday.
In her round one and two matches, Barrientos was dominant with 5-0 and 17-1 wins to get to the quarterfinal win over Leon-Goodrich.
Middleburg freshman Fallon Dames finished third at 115 in her first Knockout with a 17-7 win over Flagler Palm Coast's Mackenzie Allcroft who beat Dames in the quarterfinals to send here to consolations. Allcroft lost in the semifinal to eventual champion Camdyn Elliott of Gulf Breeze, last year's 110 state champion.
Lorena Chaput, at 140 for Middleburg, lost 8-1 in her second match to state number one Julianna Caisse and finished with a 3-2 slate; Memphis Moses went 2-2 at 115; Lillian Bradshaw went 3-2 at 100 and Cyndi Almonte went 1-2 at 155.
For Oakleaf, Zoe Goode at 145 is still in for a third place medal with a BYE and a 2-1 record putting her in the quarterfinals where she lost 11-4, but is in the consolation semifinals; Kayleene Felix went 2-2 at 155; Lamees Hudson went 3-2 at 170; Rosalie Waters had two BYEs with a 1-2 record on the mat with a loss to Memphis Moses of Middleburg; and Tatyana Centeno finished 2-1 at 140.
