MIDDLEBURG – The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man suspected of shoplifting at a Walmart. It wound up charging him with possession of methamphetamine when they searched him at the Clay County Jail.

Steven Andrew Besand, 36, of Jacksonville, was charged with resisting law enforcement with violence, possession of methamphetamine and shoplifting after a security officer said he failed to pay for all his items at a self-checkout register on Oct. 24. According to the arrest report, he tried to flee and fought with a sheriff’s deputy in the parking lot.

After he was detained, CCSO confirmed several items in the shopping bag were stolen. They also found methamphetamine in his wallet.

Besand’s bond is $1100,508.
