GREEN COVE SPRINGS – An Orange Park man was arrested following a chase that lasted 24.5 miles, many at a high rate of speed along State Roads 16 and 21, and on foot through backyards on Feb. 27.
James Allen Todd, 35, was caught and charged with possession of 3.68 grams of fentanyl, resisting arrest, fleeing and eluding law enforcement at a high rate of speed with lights and siren active without regard for the safety of property or people, reckless driving, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage and driving with a suspended license. Clay County Sheriff's Office deputy had attempted to pull him over at Oakridge and Idlewild avenues when Todd continued westbound from the left turn lane. According to the arrest report, he continued and accelerated when the deputy turned on his emergency flashlights.
Due to the high rate of speed, the deputy broke off the chase, but other deputies spotted Todd on S.R. 21, Long Bay Road, Old Jennings Road, Junction Drive and eventually Conductor Drive where his car became stuck. He ran through yards but was caught on Allaboard Drive.
According to the arrest report, Todd told deputies he ran because he knew his license was suspended and he had warrants in Jacksonville.
His bond was set at $250,017.
