Three three pointers by Ella Crowe were momentum changers for Orange Park Lady Raiders who held off late surge by Fleming Island to win district 3-5A girls basketball title 54-45. Raider coach Mike Nesmith won his second straight district title after beating Ridgeview last year.
St. Johns Country Day School beat Florida Deaf in district 3-1A for that title, 63-33, with Kendall Proffitt scoring 29 points and Sofia Mejia adding 14. Proffitt also had 10 steals and six assists. St. Johns is 15-8.
At Fletcher High, a stellar defensive effort in the second half, led by the steals and deals from guard Nya Parsons, gave the Oakleaf Lady Knights the district 2-6A title over top seed Nease, 39-35, as Oakleaf coach Fred Cole adds to his second half season surge of nine straight wins to the final. Oakleaf, 16-11, beat Fletcher 67-45 in their semifinal led by freshman guard Brinkley Todd's 25 points and 22 points from Janiyla Owens. Against Nease, Oakleaf's defense dominated the third and fourth quarter with just three points and 10 points to Nease after Nease held a 22-13 halftime lead.
In district 1-6A, Niceville beat Navarre 52-44. District 3-6A was going to be Tocoi Creek vs. Buchholz on Saturday, February 7. District 4-6A was Lake Howell beating Daytona Beach Mainland 77-55.
In 6A, Tocoi Creek is ranked third, Niceville is fourth, Navarre is sixth, Lake Howell is eighth, Buchholz is 12th, Oakleaf is 18th and Nease is 22nd. Oakleaf gets a region playoff berth for being a district champion.
At Orange Park, Fleming Island's surge was off the 26 game points of center Gianna Crawford and 14 points from guard Angel Pierce. Both teams await playoff selections for regions on Sunday. Orange Park lost in quarterfinals last year to Beachside. Probably region top seed Ponte Vedra dominated Beachside 77-32 in district 4-5A. Gainesville, last year 5A runnerup to New Smyrna Beach, beat Lincoln 58-48 in district 2-5A. Booker. T. Washington beat Pine Forest 48-22 in district 1-5A. Washington lost to Gainesville in last year's region final. In 5A rankings, Washington is #1, Ponte Vedra is #5, Orange Park is #7, Pine Forest is #9, Beachside is #12, Fleming Island is #18. Orange Park gets a region playoff berth as district champion as do Gainesville, Ponte Vedra and Booker T. Washington. Fleming Island will likely get a region berth as well with a solid won loss record and a strong strength of schedule.
In district 1-1A, LEAD Academy beat North Florida Christian 57-10. District 2-1A was NFEI over Impact Christian Academy 69-14. District 4-1A was Redeemer Christian over Seven Rivers Christian 54-50.
