PALATKA - Middleburg High's girls golf team, led by junior Braelyn Isbell's team-leading 86 on the par 70 Palatka Golf Course, stayed the course with five golfers while Fleming Island, with overall winner Sophia Moody putting in the day's best score, nearly pulled off a stunning team win with just four golfers.
"We knew with just four golfers scoring, we needed a big day by our top two girls; Sophia Moody and Shayla Abbas," said Fleming Island girls golf coach Brian Nedrich. "Shayla has a broke bone in her right foot and still played courageously for the team and that was the difference."
In the final tally, Middleburg earned the team title with five golfers and a playoff hole victory to get the district 4-2A team title after both teams tied at 384.
For the Broncos, Isbell and sophomore Jordan Bork played it close to the vest with an 88 and 90 to offset the lack of a fifth golfer for Fleming Island.
"I didn't have my best round here after having a great round a week ago on the same course," said Isbell, who has been Middleburg's top finisher through most of the season. "Jordan's score was the important one today."
For Moody, who surgically scored a 74, just two over par on the long Palatka course, give bogies along the way were offset by a string of pars and a final birdie on the 18th hole.
Abbas, who was not in a tri-match last week for Nedrich, made the decision to play in the districts and the bravey paid off with a third place overall behind Wolfson's Akery Paing, a freshman, with Abbas at 81, Paing at 79.
Abbas noted she was a little tentative on her drives with her heavily taped foot.
"When I pivoted on that foot, I felt it, but kind of just played through it I guess," Abbas said. "It should be better by regions with ice and therapy, so me and Sophia will be ready to go."
For Fleming Island's boys, senior Tyler Mawhinney played strong after noting some drive difficulties at a last dual meet a week ago.
"It's our home course for regions and that's good," said Fleming Island coach Bruce Cloud. "We're getting good golf from Ryan (Houck) and William (McGready) in this final stretch. We need a big round from one of the 3-4-5 guys to get a shot at our third state title."
At district 4-1A, St. Johns Country Day School's Beckham Cummings, with a 69 score in his district tournament, had enough for a solo berth, but, according to coach Tom Lucas, the Spartans got one of four wild card invites to take the entire team to Pensacola for their region tournament.
The Keystone Heights boys and girls teams both finished third, team wise, in their district 5-1A tournaments with Baylor Ford leading the boys and Audrey Brooks leading the girls.
