Molly Hatchet’s hard-charging Southern rock returns to 'Gator Country’

Bobby Ingram brings legendary band to Ponte Vedra Concert Hall on Nov. 29

PALM VALLEY – Bobby Ingram snuck away during a quick courtroom recess Tuesday to take care of a bit of rock and roll business. His band, Molly Hatchet, will play at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 8 p.m., and he wanted to do some media before returning to his daytime job.

“This never gets old,” he said. “We keep touring. It doesn’t stop. It just keeps going because it’s what we love to do.”

Ingram, the lead guitarist and driving force behind the legendary band behind hits such as “Flirtin’ With Disaster,” “Whiskey Man,” “Gator Country,” “Dreams I’ll Never See,” and “Bounty Hunter,” is also a lawyer. He specializes in helping younger, more impressionable rockers “protect their intellectual properties” so they don’t fall into the same traps as other bands and musicians, including Ingram.

It was a long day of jurisprudence, followed by just a few hours to get ready for a 5 a.m. flight on Wednesday to Las Vegas, where Molly Hatchet is scheduled to play at the Westgate Resort Casino on Nov. 20.

So, is he a rocker who practices law, or a lawyer who rocks?

“I’ll always be a rocker,” he said.

After being on stage for more than 40 years, the Lake Asbury resident said performing is still invigorating. There are no plans to slow down or reduce live appearances. In fact, unlike most, Molly Hatchet will play in Akron, Ohio, after the Palm Valley show. Then they will embark on an eight-city run through Germany and Switzerland before Christmas.

“I love performing,” he said. “I can’t wait to be at Ponte Vedra because it’s close to home. No travel; just playing. We have a new frontman, Parker Lee, and he reminds me so much of Danny Joe Brown. We hit it off immediately. This is a great lineup.”

The shows are in conjunction with the upcoming release of a new album, “Battleground,” which will be released in the spring. Ingram said the band initially planned to cut two tracks at Abbey Road Studios in London, but the surroundings so influenced the songs that they decided to complete the studio version there.

Not only was it recorded in Studio 2 with Paul McCartney’s microphones, but it was also engineered by Chris Bolster, who worked with McCartney, the Foo Fighters and Elton John; mastered by Lucy Laudner and Alex Wharton, who worked with McCartney and Elton John and featured the background vocals from David Gilmour’s (Pink Floyd) band on four songs.

Some of the double albums also include live recordings.

“We’re not putting it on cruise control,” Ingram said.

He promised the same for the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall show.

“You’ll see we haven’t slowed down a bit,” he said.

Tickets, which range from $33.66 to $63, are available at AXS.com.

Ingram said the band will live up to its reputation that night for “workin’ hard, playin’ tough, livin’ fast and still "Flirtin’ With Disaster."
