LAKE ASBURY— Thirty-nine students and a plethora of words to spell.
But only one winner.
The Clay County District School's annual Spelling Bee on Thursday proved to be a night of friendly competition, with Lakeside Junior High student Aidan Watt taking home the coveted 1st-place trophy.
Held at Lake Asbury Junior High, the event had an audience full of family members and faculty cheering on the spellers.
As the number of students on stage dwindled, it was Watt and Oakleaf Junior High student Isabella Mora who remained as the final two in the 11th round. Watt correctly spelled the championship word "demulcent" to earn the title.
Plantation Oaks Elementary student Ania Hill was the third-place finisher.
